Duo 2-Factor Authentication Requirement Begins January 31, 2019

June 25, 2018

Beginning January 31, 2019, all university employees (i.e. full-time, part-time, adjunct faculty, student employees) will be required to use Duo two-factor authentication to access all university single sign-on (SSO) systems. These systems include: Gmail, Ninernet, Canvas and My UNC Charlotte.

Additionally, ITS is investigating the possibility of increasing the password reset time frame from 90 to 365 days for anyone who uses Duo.

Why?
Duo significantly improves the security of university data that ITS is entrusted to protect. That said, the new UNC System Policy 1400.3 encourages universities to implement "multi-factor authentication" (i.e. Duo) to help prevent unauthorized access to accounts and systems. NC State successfully implemented Duo as an employee requirement in 2017 and I expect to see others follow suit.

Sign Up for Duo + Help
Don't wait, if you're not already using Duo, it's time to sign up. Here are some helpful FAQs to get you started:

How do I sign up for Duo?

    How do I use Duo?

Do I need to use Duo every time I login?

Do You Supervise Student Employees?
If yes, be sure they're aware of this new policy and that they sign up for Duo. We suggest implementing Duo sign up as part of your on-boarding process.

The IT Service Desk can also help. They can be reached at x.7-5500 or help.uncc.edu. Your attention to keep UNC Charlotte information as secure as possible is necessary and appreciated.
