The purpose of this standard is to establish the university’s obligation to ensure secure disposal of hardware and media.
It is the joint responsibility of the hardware and/or media owner and the department/college to ensure the secure disposal of hard drives, other digital storage devices and removable media. This standard applies to all media containing data obtained by or from UNC Charlotte staff, faculty, students, associates, affiliates, contractors, volunteers or visitors using UNC Charlotte facilities, services or IT systems.
Direct any general questions about this standard to your unit’s Information Security Liaison. If you have specific questions, please contact ITS Information Security Compliance at ISComplianceemail@example.com.
When departments are considering the transfer, surplus or donation of hardware and media, they must ensure that data has been properly removed by destroying, purging, or clearing.
The UNC Charlotte Guideline for Hardware and Media Disposal provides additional information for appropriate disposal of hardware and media.
ISO/IEC 27002 was adopted by The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2012. All standards and guidelines are based on this code of practice for Information Security Management.
