Local and Long Distance Services
ITS local service provides students residential line service with the following features:
Note: you do not need to dial a '1' before any local calls. If you do so, the Central Office will reject the call.
Long Distance service is not provided with the campus local phone service. Students may use calling cards, or purchase prepaid cards or use cellular service to make long distance calls. Prepaid cards are for sale at a variety of campus locations including the C-Stores, Bookstore, and Cone Center's Candy Counter.
Access to calling card and collect calls through the long distance carrier of your choice. (Students can access another long distance carrier by dialing the carrier's 800 number and then entering an account number for that carrier)

Telephone Features
ITS provides phone service to resident students through a network of Intecom switches. A single analog phone line is provided in each apartment or room (with the exception of Greek Village). Standard features include call waiting, last number redial and 3-way dialing.
Private Phone Lines
Private phone lines may be purchased by the student on a semester by semester basis. All charges will be billed to Student Accounts.
ITS Phone Service provides distinctive ringing for on campus and off campus calls:
As the originator of the call, you can add a third party to the conversation.
The steps below are for adding a 3rd party:
When a called number is busy or unanswered:
The Callback feature automatically calls you back (with 3 rings) when the busy on-campus extension you are trying to reach becomes idle. When you answer, you hear the extension you called begin to ring. If you ignore the ring back, the called extension does not ring and the phone system cancels the callback. You can only Callback one extension at a time; this feature is only effective for on-campus student extensions.
To leave a Callback on a busy extension:
Abbreviated dialing allows you to use one-digit codes to dial the off-campus numbers you use most frequently. You make your own directory containing up to 10 off-campus numbers, and you assign each number an abbreviated dial code (0 to 9). Ten abbreviated dial codes are available per residential extension number.
If you do not want the Call Waiting feature, contact the Help Center. All roommates must agree to the cancelation.
To set-up an abbreviated dial code:
To make an abbreviated dial call:
The Call Waiting feature notifies you of a second, incoming call. The indication of a call waiting is a beep in your ear. You may connect with the second call using the steps described below or you may ignore the beep. If you ignore the beep, the second caller will continue to hear ringing until they hang up.
To answer Call Waiting:
To switch between callers:
When one party hangs up, to return to the other party:
Repair Services
Before calling ITS for repair, test your telephone equipment on another phone jack. If you have any cordless phones plugged in your jack, unplug them all and plug in a regular analog phone. If that telephone does not work correctly, call ITS at extension 7-3100. If the problem is in your equipment, you must arrange for the repair with an off campus repair service.
ITS does not repair/service privately owned telephone equipment. ITS will repair UNC Charlotte -owned lines and equipment at no charge, but a fee will be accessed for damage caused by the user.
Telephone Harassment
If you receive harassing phone calls, follow these procedures:
Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS)
