This FAQ is based on the most common questions we normally encounter. If you do not find an immediate answer here, you may contact Help Center (faculty) ask to speak with someone about our Classroom Observation Program.

49er Express

How does the Group feature work?

49er Express groups are available for registered Student Organizations
 

The student organization advisor is the Group owner and should make the Group request:

  1. Click Groups icon in 49er Express
  2. Click Request Group

Group owner:

  • Owner is the administrative contact
  • Requests the 49er Express group
  • Ensures compliance with University policies
  • Designates Group Leader to approve membership requests and other duties

49er Express groups features:

  • Email members
  • Read and submit group articles
  • Access a group chat room and calendar
  • View and submit group photos
  • Access and submit group Internet resources
  • View information about other group members
  • Guests can view general information with option to join

Public & restricted groups:

  • Public groups support open enrollment
  • Restricted groups have limited enrollment based on specific conditions or requirements

How long can I keep my access?

Your NinerNET account provides access to 49er Express and University email.  Your account remains active for two consecutive registration periods following your last enrollment (not counting summer). After that grace period, your account will be removed. If you decide to enroll at UNC Charlotte in the future, your NinerNET account will be reactivated.

Is 49er Express secure?

Yes. 49er Express uses SSL/TLS encryption to guard against various security threats including eavesdropping and impersonation. If the information is sensitive, 49er Express will use encryption.

To improve speed and performance, 49er Express does not encrypt navigation oriented pages. As users navigate around 49er Express, the address bar will switch between secure (https://) and non-secure (http://) URLs. This reflects how 49er Express will take the appropriate steps to secure sensitive content and operations.

For example:
When users visit the 49er Express Login page, depending on the browser, either a lock icon will be found in the address bar, and/or the URL will start with "https://". To protect passwords, 49er Express uses the secure protocol to prevent eavesdropping on the connection. However, after log in, the lock disappears and/or the URL switches to "http://".

Non-Secure Pages Containing Secure iFrames:

A number of links within 49er Express will securely log in users and redirect the browser to other UNC Charlotte services. These services include NinerMail, Banner Self Service, and Moodle. In most cases, a new browser tab opens for the requested service, e.g. NinerMail and Moodle.

One exception is Banner Self Service. 49er Express securely logs users into Banner Self Service as it does with other services to protect user credentials. Unlike other services, it provides a page that uses inline frames (iframe) to present 49er Express navigation at the top of the page and Banner Self Service at the bottom of the page. The page containing the iframes does not use a secure connection and the address bar shows a URL starting with "http://". However, the iframe for Banner Self Service does use "https://" to protect student, personnel and financial data. This is not readily apparent without taking extra steps to verify that the Banner Self Service iframe is secure.

Here are steps to verify secure connection for the Banner Self Service iframe:

  1. Log into 49er Express
  2. Click on a link to Banner Self Service
    • Students can use the link "Click here for Banner Self Service" found on the "My 49er" tab, in the "Billing/Financial Aid/Self Service" channel in the left most column.
    • Faculty or staff can use the link "Banner Self Service" found on the "Employee Home" tab, in the "Employee & Benefits" channel in the left most column
  3. Move the cursor onto the browser window anywhere underneath the Banner Self Service tabs. The first tab should be "Personal Information".

For Internet Explorer:

  1. Right-click and select "Properties"
  2. Review the URL in the "Address: (URL)" field, it should begin with "https://"

For Firefox:

  1. Right-click and select the "This Frame" menu and then the item "View Frame Info"
  2. Review the URL in the "Address:" field, it should begin with "https://"

What if 49er Express is unavailable?

49er Express may be unavailable due to a planned or unplanned system outage.  If access to 49er Express is not available, you may still be able to login to some services with Direct Access.

What other settings do I need to check so that I can login?

Allow pop-ups:
Go to the site you want to allow pop-ups

  • Internet Explorer
    Click the yellow notification bar
    Always allow pop-ups for this site
    (permanently displays pop-ups for the site)
     
  • Firefox
    Select Options and select preferred option for pop-ups

Allow University sites as trusted:

  • Internet Explorer
    Click Tools > Internet Options
    Click the Privacy tab, click Sites
    Type *.uncc.edu in the box, click Allow
    Close and reopen browser and login again

Adjust security settings:

  • Internet Explorer
    Click Tools > Internet Options
    Click Advanced tab
    Check both Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0
    Uncheck Use TLS 1.0

Why do I get a Session Timeout or Session Ended Message?

You may need to clear your browser's cache:

  • Internet Explorer 6
    Click Tools > Internet Options, then select both Delete Cookies and Delete Files.
     
  • Internet Explorer 7
    Click Tools > Delete Browsing History, then select Delete Cookies and Delete Files.
     
  • Internet Explorer 8
    Click Safety (the shield icon) > Delete Browsing History, then select Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and History > Click Delete.
     
  • Firefox 3
    Click Tools > Clear Private Data, then select Cache and click Clear Private Data Now.
     
  • Firefox 4-7 on Windows XP
    Click Tools > Clear Recent History
    Change Time range to clear: to Everything
    Click Clear Now
     
  • Firefox 4-7 on Vista and Windows 7
    Click the Firefox button
    Click the arrow next to History and then click Clear Recent History
    Change Time range to clear: to Everything
    Click Clear Now

Will my session timeout if I'm not using 49er Express?

49er Express will time out after 1 hour of inactivity.

Banner

How can I view my unofficial transcript?

  1. Login to 49er Express with your NinerNET account
  2. Go to My 49er tab
  3. Click here for Banner Self Service
  4. Click Student Services/Student Accounts
  5. Click Student Records > Academic Transcript

An outstanding financial balance prevents the viewing of your unofficial transcript online and the ordering of an official transcript.

How do alumni and affiliates check their academic records?

  1. Go to Banner Self Service
  2. Click Get My UNC Charlotte ID to get ID # and PIN
  3. Go to Self Service Site
  4. Click Enter Secure Area and enter ID # & PIN

How do I access Banner Self Service?

There are two ways to access Banner Self Service:

  1. Login to 49er Express
    My 49er tab > Click here for Banner Self Service

Why am I getting the message "Web Access Disabled"?

This message will display after multiple failed login attempts.  You must contact the student IT Service Desk to have Banner access re-enabled.

Will my Banner Self Service session time out?

If you receive the message, "You have either timed-out due to inactivity or have logged out from a previous session.", log out of 49er Express and login again. 49er Express will time out after 1 hour of inactivity.

e-Learning

How do I change my Moodle email delivery?

  1. Select View Profile under Navigation or click your name at the bottom of the screen
  2. Click the Edit Profile link under Settings
  3. Email digest type shows your delivery options

What are the supported browsers for Moodle?

Internet Explorer 7.0, 8.0
Firefox 16.x
Safari 2, 3, 4

If you have problems viewing documents or other display issues, try using another browser from this list.

What if my Moodle quiz requires Respondus LockDown Browser?

You must have IE or Safari installed to use the LockDown Browser. You cannot take the quiz using another browser.  LockDown Browser prohibits printing, copying and pasting information, or accessing web sites unless they are associated with the quiz.

A quiz requiring LockDown Browser will prompt you to download the software. You will only need to install it once.

  1. After the install, close the current Moodle window
  2. Double-click the LockDown Browser icon on desktop
  3. Log in to Moodle again

What issues should I be aware of when taking a Moodle quiz?

Use a wired connection, if possible, wireless connections can be unstable.  During the quiz, click Save but do not Submit often.

Why can't I complete my Moodle profile?

You must fill out *required fields before clicking Update Profile.  Also, in the General section=> Description field is required.

After uploading a new image you may need to refresh your browser:
Internet Explorer - click Refresh
Firefox - click Reload

Why can't I edit my Moodle forum post?

You can edit a post up to 30 minutes after submission.  You'll need to contact your instructor to add to your submission if you've exceeded the time limit.

Why do I get the message "Form contained question that is not in questionids" when completing a Moodle quiz?

If the error message "Form contained question that is not in questionids" is received during a multi page quiz, wait for page to load before clicking (Previous), (Next) or the question number links.

Why doesn't my Moodle course appear?

Moodle course availability is controlled by the instructor.  If your class isn't listed, check first with your instructor to ensure that course access has been granted to students.

Hardware, Internet, Software

Am I required to own a computer?

Students in the School of Architecture and the College of Engineering are required to own a computer. However, most colleges at UNC Charlotte don't require computer ownership.

Can I get access to DreamSpark?

Students registered with the following colleges and departments receive a welcome email from Microsoft with a userid (email address) and password to access Microsoft DreamSpark. Login at UNC Charlotte DreamSpark.

 

How can I get software training?

Login to SkillPort with your NinerNET account for online training.  SkillPort includes software training for popular packages like Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.  There are also thousands of courses in technology and business,  plus Books 24/7 online reference materials.

How do I get Internet access in campus housing?

Campus residences connect  to the Internet with Time Warner Cable's Road Runner.  

For technical support with Road Runner students should contact the UNC Charlotte Time Warner office, located on the right side of Maple Hall, near the Community Room. Students may call the office using on-campus extension 7-3778 from an on-campus phone or 704‑687‑3778 from an off-campus (cell) phone. Students are also welcome to come into the office. The Time Warner Cable Collegiate support representative will be happy to assist you!

Road Runner technicians are available for walk-in assistance Monday through Friday, from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM and 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

You may also send an email to Road Runner support at unccrrsupport@twcarolina.com with any concerns you may be experiencing. Please include your name, campus room number, and a cell phone number where you can be reached, and a description of your service issue.

Housing Technology Services can provide additional information about computing in residential housing.

Where can I get free antivirus software?

Download Trend Micro AntiVirus for your laptop and/or home computer and get the latest information on virus protection.

Why do I get an "Access forbidden" error when I try to view my personal web page?

If you receive the following error message when trying to view a personal web page:

Access forbidden!
You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Error 403
webpages.uncc.edu

Check your H:\public_html folder name. You must use lowercase letters, ex: public_html not PUBLIC_HTML or you will receive an error message.

 

NinerMail

"Cannot log in. Please verify your username and password"

  1. Change your password at Password Manager
  2. Login to NinerMail with your NinerNET username and password
  3. Login to 49er Express and click the NinerMail email icon

Make sure there are no extra spaces after email, server or username.

"Cannot send message. A copy has been placed in your Outbox. The email was rejected because the server does not allow relaying."

  1. Delete your previous UNC Charlotte mail account (if applicable)
     
  2. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars
    Tap the UNCC email account
     
  3. SMTP Server: pod51008.outlook.com / Server should be set to "On"
    Enter username (full University email address) and password
    SSL:ON
    Authentication Type: Password
    Server port: 587

"Password or Username is Incorrect", "Server denied access for the given username and password", "Authorization or Authentication failed", "Unable to verify account information"

  1. Change your password at Password Manager
  2. Login to NinerMail with your NinerNET username and password
  3. Login to 49er Express and click the NinerMail email icon

Make sure you are using your full University email address as your Login ID. If you are prompted to enter a Domain, leave it blank.

"Unable to Verify Account Information"

Check the domain and server settings. The domain should be blank. If you have a "Domain\Username" field, don't include the "\" and enter only your full University email address.

Can I setup my NinerMail account in Outlook?

You can configure NinerMail for use with email programs on your PC or Mac. You can find the server and port settings in NinerMail by choosing Options, Account and Settings for POP, IMAP, and SMTP access...

How do I login?

  • Login to 49er Express and click the email icon
  • Go to NinerMail and login with your NinerNET username and password..

If you have problems logging in you may need to change your password in PW Manager.

**You login to NinerMail first through 49er Express or NinerMail before you can reconfigure your email client on your personal device.**

How do I turn off message threading/conversations?

In the message list (the center column), click Conversations by Date. At the bottom of this list Conversation is checked. Uncheck this box to order your message list by date or other options.

How much storage space do I have?

You have 10GB of email storage space and you can receive attachments up to 18MB. You can view your email quota in NinerMail by hovering your mouse over your name above the Inbox folder.

What are the settings to access email using POP, IMAP or SMTP?

What are the supported browsers?

Most web browsers can be used to access NinerMail. If you use a browser that doesn't support the full features, a light version of NinerMail will open. For more information visit Microsoft's NinerMail Supported Browsers.

Why am I getting error messages when I try to set up my Blackberry?

  1. Delete your previous UNC Charlotte mail account (if applicable)
  2. Go to Settings > Add an email account
  3. Enter your full University email address and an INCORRECT PASSWORD
  4. Click Next. A "setup failed error" will appear
  5. Click "I will provide the settings to add this email account"
  6. Type your email address and the CORRECT PASSWORD
  7. Server: outlook.com
    Username: your full UNC Charlotte email address
    Choose IMAP. Click Next
  8. If you are prompted to input a URL during the manual setup, use https://pod51008.outlook.com/owa

Why am I having problems setting up my personal device for Outlook to receive NinerMail?

You must login to NinerMail through 49er Express or NinerMail before you can reconfigure your email client on your personal device.

If you're having problems with mobile device setup, first follow these 3 steps (in this order):

  1. Change your password at Password Manager
  2. Login to NinerMail with NinerNET username and password
  3. Login to 49er Express and click the NinerMail email icon

Why do I get a Windows Live account information screen?

If you access NinerMail through 49er Express and receive a Windows Live login screen asking to verify your account information, please click Cancel.

Follow these three steps to resolve the issue: 

  1. Go to PW Manager and change your password. Wait 5 minutes
  2. Go to NinerMail and login with your NinerNET username and password
  3. Login to 49er Express and click the email icon

Why is my email showing incorrect dates and times?

You need to set the correct time zone in NinerMail. Login through 49er Express or NinerMail and follow these steps:

  1. Click Options.
  2. Click See All Options.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Regional at the top. Check the current time zone. It should be set to Eastern time.

Why is the "Send" button not working working and other options appear unavailable?

Some problems have been identified using Windows Vista or 7 with some versions of Google Chrome. Try using another browser.

Internet Explorer:
  1. Click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced
  2. Click Restore advanced settings
  3. Click Reset…, then click OK on the warning message
  4. Click Apply, then click OK to exit
  5. Close and reopen Internet Explorer
Firefox:
  1. Close the browser.
  2. Hold SHIFT and open Firefox (Safe Mode)
  3. Check Reset toolbars and controls and Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults
  4. Click Make Changes and Restart. Firefox will automatically open.

 

NinerNET

How do I activate my NinerNET account?

  1. First time users go to Password Manager
  2. Click Activate my NinerNET Account
  3. Setup your security questions, create your NinerNET password and receive your username

Your NinerNET account logs you into 49er Express, NinerMail, the University network and other applications.

Your University email account is valid as long as you are enrolled in classes. If you are not enrolled in classes for two consecutive terms (not counting summer), your email account will be removed.

How do I look up my username?

How long can I keep my NinerNET account?

Your NinerNET account provides access to 49er Express and University email.  Your account remains active for two consecutive registration periods following your last enrollment (not counting summer). After that grace period, your account will be removed. If you decide to enroll at UNC Charlotte in the future, your NinerNET account will be reactivated.

How often does my password expire?

Your password will expire every 180 days.  An email reminder will be sent 15 days before expiration.  You should change your password when you receive the email reminder.  If you allow your password to expire, you must contact the IT Service Desk to have it reset.

What are the rules for creating my password?

Minimum   8 characters
Maximum   16 characters
Not Allowed   Your last name, first name, email address, or the words "pass" or "word" as part of your password
Required   One lower case alpha character
One upper case alpha character
One numeric character
One special character from the list
! * + - / _
History   8 (cannot reuse last 8 passwords)
    Password cannot be changed more than twice in a 24-hr period

 

What if I forgot my password?

  1. Go to PW Manager
  2. Enter username and click Forgot Password
  3. Answer 3 security questions
    After 3 failed login attempts, your account will be locked for 15 minutes

Wireless

How can I get the best performance?

Access points are in most common areas on campus.  The fastest connection is up to 100 feet from the access point and slows at 200 feet and beyond until out of range.  Access is available up to 350ft from access point.  Interference from walls and objects can affect signal.

How do I login?

  1. Start wireless client
  2. Select uncc49er network
  3. Enter NinerNET username and password
    (University guests enter email address in the Guest field)

Is my data encrypted over wireless?

Wireless data encryption is not enabled for use on campus, which means any data transmitted will not be encrypted. Only your NinerNET username and password are encrypted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. It is strongly recommended that you do not view or communicate sensitive information when using wireless

What can I check if I have problems connecting?

Check that DHCP/DNS settings are configured to obtain IP address and DNS server address automatically:

Why am I having problems connecting when I've used wireless before?

  • Check radio signal strength
  • Enable wireless NIC/disable LAN NIC
  • Set Network name or SSID = uncc49er (lowercase)
  • Disable WEP encryption

Why does my connection speed seem slow or unstable?

  • Check wireless client utility to ensure strong signal
  • When many users connect to a single wireless access point (radio transmitter), performance will slow
  • Interference from walls and microwaves also affect performance
  • Possibly reached the boundary of the radio signal
  • You may want to move to another access point
