Office of Information Security

Dear Faculty, Staff, Students, Alumni and Visitors,

UNC Charlotte, in the process of conducting university business, supporting the academic environment and managing the welfare of the university community, produces, collects, and uses many types of information and information assets, including Personally Identifiable Information and Protected Health Information.  The protection of information and information assets is critical for University's mission and operations.

Accordingly, UNC Charlotte has adopted an Information Security Strategy intended to;

• Align information security with business strategy;
• Comply with applicable legal and regulatory requirements;
• Meet industry standards; to manage, monitor and mitigate information security risks and any security breaches;
• Optimize information security investments;
• Manage information security resources efficiently; and
• Monitor ongoing effectiveness.

The University has developed and implemented an Information Security Program designed to protect and provide for the availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and non-repudiation of information, information systems and information assets.

Information Assurance is a shared responsibility. We are committed towards building partnerships and working collaboratively with all of you to successfully achieve our goals and objectives. 

During the interim period until the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) role is filled, the following responsibilities have been updated:

Security Incident Response - Rowanne Joyner has the coordinating role for our security incident response.  The Information Security team, the CIO and the appropriate ITS Directors continue to serve on the response team.

Security Policy and Data Security Officer (DSO) Interactions - Rowanne is co-chair of the Information Assurance subcommittee in IT Governance with Jesh Humphrey.  The subcommittee is the main vehicle for DSO's to work through data security agreement needs and resources. 

IT Governance - Pat Barber has the role of Co-Chair of the IT Advisory Committee (ITAC) with Chris Ervin.

As a reminder, the main point of contact for IT Security and other IT needs continues to be the IT Service Desk (help@uncc.edu or 7-5500) so that campus needs can be expeditiously received, tracked and resolved.  Emergency IT Security needs should be emailed to security@uncc.edu.
