Summer Technology Updates (& a bit of Shakespeare)

May 9, 2017

Before many of you leave to pursue summer travels or new projects, here’s some quick UNC Charlotte technology notes & reminders:

  • Moodle, Turnitin & Saba Meeting all retire May 15. In their place: Canvas, Vericite and WebEx.

  • Smart Podiums are being upgraded to Windows 10 this summer.

  • Large-scale system and applications outages are planned from 6pm Friday, May 19 - 10am Saturday, May 20.

  • File storage - While traveling, remember you can use Dropbox and Google Drive for anytime, anywhere file storage.

  • University-owned Windows and Mac machines - Central ITS is working with other campus IT Partners to design a process that keeps everyone’s operating systems (OS) up-to-date. More information will be sent in the coming months.

  • Anti-virus software is changing - In September, Trend will no longer be available for home use. If you use Trend now, don’t want for the license to expire, please use Defender for Windows or Sophos for Macs now. This FAQ can help.

  • Outdoor wireless - Outdoor wireless coverage around campus will increase significantly. Be on the lookout for details in the next Chancellor’s Newsletter!

  • Academic advising systems - DegreeWorks will launch for new undergraduates during SOAR and continuing undergraduates Fall semester. Also, SSC Campus will replace Starfish this summer.

As always, there are lots of ways to reach us for help: you can use phone, email, FAQs and more!
